What is a wellness program?

An employer-based program that teaches employees about healthy lifestyles that include making good nutrition choices, the value of an exercise program, strategies to reduce stress, screen for chronic diseases (heart disease, diabetes, and depression).

Workplace wellness programs are a strategy businesses are using to introduce employees to healthy lifestyle practices. Programs may lower risk for heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, depression, and some cancers, according to information on the NIH website. A wellness program can help employees adopt healthier lifestyles and lower their risk of developing costly chronic diseases while also improving worker productivity

Why invest in a workplace wellness program?

Chronic diseases are among the most common and costly of all health problems – and the CDC reports that adopting healthy lifestyles can help prevent them.  A wellness program that seeks to keep employees healthy is a key long-term strategy that employers can use to manage their workforce and to curb rising health care costs.  A report cited by NIH found that medical costs fall by about $3.27 for every dollar spent on wellness program and that absenteeism costs fall by about $2.73 for every dollar spent.

The CDC reports that productivity losses related to personal and family health problems cost US employers more than $225 billion every year.  And the indirect costs of poor health – including absenteeism, disability and reduced work output – are even higher.  That's why workplace wellness programs can good business sense.
